Analytics Enables Robust COVID-19 Patient and Staff Contact Tracing

Summary

Carle Health was using all available business intelligence resources to meet COVID-19 challenges. The organization quickly realized that the functionality provided by its EMR was insufficient for COVID-19 contact tracing efforts. Carle Health attempted to support infection preventionists in obtaining the critical data required for contact tracing. Still, this work effort required manual data review and tracking, creating a substantial work burden when teams were already managing competing, high-priority demands.

THE CHALLENGE

Carle Health was using all available business intelligence resources to meet COVID-19 challenges. The organization quickly realized that the functionality provided by its EMR was insufficient for COVID-19 contact tracing efforts. Carle Health attempted to support infection preventionists in obtaining the critical data required for contact tracing. Still, this work effort required manual data review and tracking, creating a substantial work burden when teams were already managing competing, high-priority demands.

THE PROJECT

Carle Health is leveraging the Health Catalyst® Data Operating System (DOS™) platform and the COVID-19 Patient & Staff Tracker for its contact tracing efforts. The analytics application uses admission data, discharge and transfer data, patient-specific infection data, and isolation orders to visualize and identify patients with COVID-19 and to pinpoint any potential exposures. The organization can quickly and easily identify all patients and staff who may have been exposed to the patient with COVID-19 down to the specific bed level where the interaction took place. Carle Health is able to notify contacts of exposure, address questions and concerns, and ensure patients and staff receive SARS-CoV-2 testing, supportive service, and quarantine as appropriate.

THE RESULT

By utilizing DOS and the COVID-19 Patient & Staff Tracker, Carle Health is improving the efficiency, effectiveness, and accuracy of its COVID-19 contact tracing.

  • Daily contact tracing data available with the click of a button for more than 600 patients and thousands of employees.
  • Rapid identification of potential exposures, ensuring timely follow-up.
  • 1,000 hours of burdensome, manual data collection eliminated. Infection preventionists are able to redirect that time into preventing further spread of COVID-19.
COVID-19 continues to raise awareness about the importance of data in operational decision making. We were able to harness the power of combined data from multiple sources to inform the appropriate clinical response and tailor staffing and operational needs appropriately. Through the thoughtful application of our AI capabilities we were able to avoid over 1,000 hours of manual work.
