Referral Management Analytics for Ambulatory Care Performance

Part of the Ambulatory Suite, the Referral Management analytic accelerator pulls together data from multiple systems to give you clear insights on the in-network and out-of-network referral patterns of your providers, so you can understand the impact of referrals on your ambulatory care practice and identify opportunities for improvement.

The Challenge

Why Referral Management Is Critical to Ambulatory Performance

Health systems that have acquired ambulatory care practices—and independent ambulatory practices alike—face tremendous financial pressures and challenges to financial sustainability. If you’re an ambulatory care leader, you’re looking to improve the efficiency of the services you provide and find cost savings without negatively impacting patient outcomes, the community, or the integrity of the organization. Yet it can be difficult to access data that brings actionable insights to inform decisions to improve patient access, panel management, provider productivity, referral management, or quality scores.

Our Approach

Referral Management Analytics to Improve Access and Retain Revenue

Part of the Ambulatory Suite, the Referral Management Analytic Accelerator pulls together data from multiple systems to give you clear insights on the in-network and out-of-network referral patterns of your providers, so you can understand the impact of referrals on your ambulatory care practice and identify opportunities for improvement. This includes the efficiency of throughput by measuring and tracking conversion rates, along with primary care-to-specialist leakage to out-of-network providers.

For referrals received by the health system, you can review operational metrics such as rates of converting a referral to a scheduled appointment, cycle times, and the proportional trends from source provider (internal or external).

For referrals sent outside of your health system, you can see the number of referrals, percentages, and what service the referral was for, along with who they were referring the patient to (available detail depends on data quality).

Benefits

Measurable Benefits of Referral Management Analytics

  • Increase in-network referrals: Data on referrals helps you identify providers or clinics with low referral rates, so you can leverage communication and engagement to inform providers in your network about the services your practice provides.
  • Increase conversion of referrals to scheduled appointments in your practice: Data on referral conversions helps you identify clinics or providers where there is an opportunity to open access and improve the quantity and speed of converting a referral to an appointment.
  • Reduce out-of-network referral leakage: Data on outgoing referral patterns helps you identify providers with high volumes of referrals sent out of network for services already offered by your network, so you can improve workflows and communicate about available services to providers.
