The Patient Flow  analytics accelerator provides data and visualizations to help teams improve the efficiency of patient movement through a facility—with the goal of increasing satisfaction, lowering costs, and preserving or increasing quality of care.

The Challenge

Health systems that have acquired ambulatory care practices—and independent ambulatory practices alike—face tremendous financial pressures and challenges to financial sustainability. If you’re an ambulatory care leader, you’re looking to improve the efficiency of the services you provide and find cost savings without negatively impacting patient outcomes, the community, or the integrity of the organization. Yet it can be difficult to access data that brings actionable insights to inform decisions to improve patient access, panel management, provider productivity, referral management, or quality scores.

Our Approach

The Patient Flow analytics accelerator provides a holistic view of the workflows and resources that affect your ability to place patients at the right level of care, in the right unit, as efficiently as possible. Multiple views and visualizations of the end-to-end patient journey help you identify bottlenecks and understand the causes—as well as distinguish between activities that add value to the patient experience and those that simply contribute to waste.

Benefits

  • Understand demand and capacity. The accelerator shows the common workflows across the hospital and can use admission, discharge, and transfer (ADT) logs from the EMR to establish patterns, trends, and cycle times of common workflows.
  • Identify issues with the biggest impact to your system. The accelerator reveals your highest utilized workflows and the issues that slow or complicate patient movement within them.
  • See and understand variation in expected patient pathways. How well does your patient flow match the ideal or expected path for a particular disease state? Where is there variation—and what might be driving it? The accelerator lets you explore variation to determine what interventions may be warranted to standardize around the safest and most efficient practices.
  • Speed time to analytic value. The accelerator allows you to quickly see—and target—the source of problems in patient flow by stratifying and comparing data by time, current capacity, provider by specialty or service line, chief complaint or primary procedure, and patient (demographics, type).
  • Satisfy requirements of The Joint Commission (TJC). The accelerator includes a daily monitoring function that easily meets TJC standards related to patient flow.
